2020: The Year in Review

The year 2020 was unlike any other years in our lifetimes, and certainly one for the history books. Generations will talk about it for generations. Our typical annual “experience” was different this year to say the least, and it seems that 2020 is still unfolding.

But extraordinary achievements are not found in mediocre experiences and despite all the gloomy reviews this year has registered globally, it is almost tempting to call it a once in a lifetime opportunity. I don’t wish to have a repeat of this year. However, I don’t want to miss what this year has taught me. Borrowing from the best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell, it was a year for the Outliers.

The first half of the year, with global pandemic limiting our operations, we had to switch most of our activities online. Thankfully, we had significant digital infrastructure in place already and we were able to switch to online with less disruption. Our digital activities and services put us in a strong position to adapt and innovate and our all-time motto of providing unique business solutions has never been more relevant.

During the height of the covid-19 pandemic in China, LC Venture responded by establishing a Coronavirus Relief Team that was instrumental in sourcing and donating medical equipment that were in high demand in China and especially in Wuhan. BeGo Education had also opened its premium English classes for free exclusively to Wuhan kids.

In one of the highlights of last year, our investment portfolio BeGo Education successfully established a tripartite agreement with Nord Anglia Fangshan School and the Jingdu Golf Club at the Jingdu Joyful Longevity City Complex. The Agreement was spearheaded by LC Venture and is aimed at deeper cooperation between the all parties.

BeGo Education also held its annual event to explore boarding schools in the UK and invited Old Harrovians (OH) and Rugbeian in November last year to meet with Chinese families to discuss boarding schools and pathway to higher education. Unable to attend the event in person due to travel restrictions, Harrow School Headmaster Mr. Alastair sent a video message addressing to families and welcoming them to Harrow School. In what was our first streamlined event, the event was attended by over 30,000 viewers online.

Despite the global lockdown and travel restrictions, LC Venture’s representation in online webinars has more than tripled with LC Venture featuring as a major contributor in many online webinars and speaking engagements. In a rare change of events and due to China’s efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus, I was able to join the speakers at Finance China 2020 Conference in Shenzhen. Organized by The Asian banker, the annual Country-Level Finance Conferences brings together banks and financial institutions from all over Asia.

LC Venture was also able to reach a wider audience through collaboration with top universities in the UK and US including Cambridge, LSE and the University of Columbia and Chicago and top engineering and innovation firms including LAING O’ ROURKE , OIW and IET . Joined by experts from Google, JOMAS Associates, AECOM, ATKINS, Co-Creation Hub, Sworders and other experts, LC Venture was able to contribute ideas towards innovations and how to tackle the challenges of work and career in 21^st century.

The complex events of last year had caused us at LC Venture to redefine our priorities, opening up for us an exciting new avenue and opportunities to relate with our partners and customer base in a new way whilst solidifying our status as a bespoke firm in the investment and education industries in China and beyond.

While saying goodbye to 2020, we are truly looking forward to 2021 and feel certain that the new year will be more exciting with challenges and great opportunities waiting for us.
